Unarmed Security Guard Training in Texas

Before you can become a unarmed security guard in Texas, also called a non-commissioned guard, you must first gain employment with a company providing private security services. After that you must apply for license through the Texas Department of Public Safety Private Security Bureau. In addition you should adhere to the following requirements.


  • Be employed by a private security company
  • Completed Basic Training (Level 2) within 14 days of employment


A level 2 training includes 6 hours of training an can include topics like.

  • Regulations and actions
  • Police interaction
  • Use of force
  • Radio procedures
  • Emergency response
  • Role of security officers
  • Conflict resolution
  • Detainment and arrest
  • Report writing and observation
  • Penal code studies


The license must be renewed every 2 years.

Application Process

After getting a job with a private security company you must apply for a license with the PSB. This can be done either online or by mail.   • Proof of hire by a private security company
  • Complete fingerprint cards
  • Proof of completed level 2 training

Note that if you apply online any supplementary material must be sent by regular mail.
