To work as a security guard in New York you must be licensed. the following requirements must be met in order to receive a license.
Requirements
- At least 18 years of age
- United States citizen or resident alien
- No convictions of serious criminal offenses
- Completed an 8 hour pre-assignment course
- Complete 16 hours of on-the-job training within 90 days of initial employment

Maintenance
A registration as a security guard is valid for 2 years. Each year you must complete 8 hours of in-service training to maintain your license.

Before you complete the license form make sure you have the following.
- Certificate for completing an 8 hour pre-assignment course
- Signed DMV informed consent
- Receipt that proves fingerprinting at an approved vendor

Fees
There is an initial $36 application fee and a $102.25 fingerprinting fee.
Renewal of your license (every 2 years) is $25.
