Unarmed Security Guard Training in Arizona

A license is only needed if you are to work for an agency providing that pays you to provide guard services to other companies. A license is not needed if you are to work for a proprietary company, a company that pays you directly to be their own security guard.

Requirements

  • Must be a United States citizen or resident authorized to seek employment in the United States.
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Not addicted to or dependent on alcohol or drugs
  • No felony or misdemeanors (including, but limited to; violence, misconduct involving a deadly weapon, dishonesty, fraud, arson, theft and sexual misconduct) within 5 years of application.
  • Emotionally and mentally competent.
  • Complete 8 hours of pre-assigned security guard training.

Course description

The 8 hour pre-assignment training course includes, but is not limited to;

  • Orientation
  • Criminal law and law of arrest
  • Uniform and grooming
  • Communications
  • Use of force
  • General security guard procedures
  • Crime scene preservation and first response
  • Ethics
  • Emergency response procedures

Maintenance

An 8 hour refresher training course must be completed every 2 years. This includes, but is not limited to;

  • Criminal law and law of arrest
  • Use of force
  • General security guard procedures
  • Crime scene preservation and first response
  • Ethics
  • Emergency response procedures

Application process

Application forms are available at the Arizona DPS website, http://licensing.azdps.gov.

Before you apply for a personal license, make sure you have the following;

  • A properly completed fingerprint card with classifiable fingerprints.
  • 2 passport style color photographs
  • Proof of pre-assignment training

The completed form should be in person to the Phoenix Licensing Unit office or by mail to the Arizona DPS Licensing Unit.

Fees

There is a $50 registration certificate fee and a $22 fingerprint processing fee. Renewals require a $50 renewal fee.
